COST: $35.00 per boater

This event is open to all Scouts. Cubs will be able to complete some of their Paddling adventure activities. Scouts BSA are welcome as well, but we haven’t focused on any advancement activities for that group.

During this event, Scouts will be able to complete the following requirements:
  • Lions, Tigers, Wolves: No advancement to work on, just fun
  • Bears Afloat: Requirements 2-7
  • Webelos Paddle Onward: Requirements 2, 4, 6-9
  • AOL Paddle Craft: Requirements 2, 4, 6-9
  • Scouts BSA & Older Scout Participants: No advancement, just fun

There are a number of things to note about this activity:
  • This is being run by the Haw River Canoe and Kayak Co. (HRCK), with oversight from the district and council.
  • Only the 9:00 session is open – the 1:00 session will be available only if that one fills up.
  • There are a limited number of boats available – HRCK sustained considerable damage from Chantal, including 2 of their transport vans being completely submerged, and they are still recovering. Please let as many Scouts as possible use the boats.
  • Units must register as a group and leaders must certify the completion of the items below (swim tests and online course). This registration form MUST BE COMPLETED and submitted to Jeff Pitts at scouter.jeff.pitts@gmail.com by September 28, at the latest.
  • Scouts and adults, who are boating, must have completed the Scouting America swim test, or they are considered non-swimmers.
  • In the flyer/registration form, note the boating partner rules, based on age group and swim level.
  • There must be 1 adult leader per 5 Cub Scouts or 1 per 10 Scouts BSA) and all of these adults must have completed the online Safety Afloat course. They do not need to be in the boats, but do need to be available at the location during the event.
  • Payment for your group must be made separately on the HRCK online registration form at https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/hawrivercanoe/items/659893/calendar/2025/10/?full-items=yes&flow=856123
  • The HRCK liability form needs to be completed by each person (or their parent) and brought to the event

Prerequisites:

  1. ALL Scouts and Scouters, who will be boating, must complete the Scouting America swim test. This is item 6 in the Safe Swim Defense.
  2. All adult leaders, who are satisfying the ratio of adults per Scouts (1 adult leader per 5 Cub Scouts or 1 per 10 Scouts BSA), must have a current certification from the Scouting America Safety Afloat course.
  3. All boaters, adult and youth, must have a completed Participant Release of Liability completed.
